Chemotherapy is a treatment used to kill cancer cells by using powerful drugs. It is often used in conjunction with other treatments such as surgery or radiation therapy to help prevent the spread of cancer.  The benefits of chemotherapy can include:

  1. Shrinking or eliminating tumors: Chemotherapy drugs are designed to kill cancer cells and can be effective in shrinking or eliminating tumors.

  2. Improving survival rates: Chemotherapy can improve survival rates in some types of cancer.

  3. Relieving symptoms: Chemotherapy can help relieve symptoms such as pain and discomfort caused by cancer.

  4. Preventing recurrence: Chemotherapy can be used to reduce the risk of cancer returning after surgery or radiation therapy.

The drugs are designed to attack and destroy rapidly dividing cancer cells, but they can also affect healthy cells that divide quickly, such as those in the hair follicles, mouth, and intestines.

Common side effects

  • Fatigue: Feeling tired and lacking energy is a common side effect of chemotherapy.

  • Nausea and vomiting: Chemotherapy drugs can irritate the stomach lining and trigger feelings of nausea and vomiting.

  • Hair loss: Chemotherapy can cause hair loss or thinning, which may be temporary or permanent.
